President Bola Tinubu has been appealed to by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, to request the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, to publish his assets.
This move is aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
SERAP's deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, on Sunday, December 29, 2024, emphasized that the President's consideration to publish his assets is a significant development, but it would carry more weight if translated into action.
The organization urged Tinubu to encourage Vice-President Kashim Shettima, ministers, leaders of the National Assembly, state governors, and local government chairmen to follow suit.
The secrecy surrounding asset declarations by public officials has been identified as a facilitator of corruption at all levels of government.
SERAP noted that transparency in asset declaration would reduce opportunities for corruption and promote public trust.
To achieve this, SERAP recommended that the President should:
- Request the CCB to publish his assets
- Encourage other high-ranking officials to do the same
- Push for the implementation of the Supreme Court decision stopping state governors from taking over local government funds
By taking these steps, President Tinubu can demonstrate his commitment to transparency and accountability, setting a positive tone for his administration.
