In a bold move to defend President Bola Tinubu's administration, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that Nigeria's economy was already on the brink of collapse before Tinubu took office in 2023.
Speaking at his Constituency Briefing and Empowerment program in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio insisted that President Tinubu inherited a dire economic situation, with Nigeria being "on life support" when he assumed office.
Akpabio, who represents Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial district, shared a personal conversation he had with President Tinubu, where the president expressed his determination to turn things around despite the daunting challenges.
"Tinubu met a very bad condition on the ground, nobody envied him," Akpabio said. "He said he was determined to change the situation, let us encourage him to change the situation."
Akpabio also highlighted President Tinubu's efforts to promote regional development, particularly in the South East. He cited the signing of the South East Development Commission into law and the allocation of key ministries, such as the Ministry of Works, as evidence of Tinubu's commitment to addressing the region's ecological and infrastructural challenges.
As the Senate President, Akpabio has been a key ally of President Tinubu, and his comments are seen as a significant endorsement of the president's economic plans.
With Nigeria's economy still reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global challenges, President Tinubu's administration faces a daunting task in reviving the economy.
But Akpabio remains optimistic, urging Nigerians to give President Tinubu the support he needs to succeed.
"Let us encourage him to change the situation," Akpabio said. "We believe that at the end of the day, we will move the country forward."
Only time will tell if President Tinubu's economic plans will bear fruit, but with the support of key allies like Senate President Akpabio, the president's chances of success just got a whole lot brighter.
